OIL SPILLAGE: EMOHUA LGA PROJECTED FOR REMEDIATION, AS PETROLEUM MINISTRY VISITS IMPACTED SITES

Following an intensified effort to combat pipeline vandalism and illegal oil bunkering activities in Emohua Local Government Area, Dr. Chidi Lloyd, the Chairman of the local government, has drawn significant attention. The Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources has identified the region as a major flashpoint in its upcoming initiative to remediate spilled sites throughout the Niger Delta region of Nigeria.

Federal Ministry of Petroleum Resources officials recently conducted a week-long tour of environmentally degraded sites in Emohua LGA, stemming from illicit oil bunkering activities and pipeline vandalism. Engr. Umeda Uchendu, PhD, who led the team, highlighted Emohua LGA as the primary focus due to the proactive stance of Dr. Chidi Lloyd, the local government chairman, in combating oil theft in the area.

Dr. Umeda, accompanied by a team of environmental scientists from the Ministry of Petroleum, assessed the extent of damage caused by illegal oil bunkering activities and provided recommendations to relevant government institutions or agencies tasked with cleanup and remediation efforts in the affected areas. Representatives from the operators of various pipelines and oil facilities in Emohua LGA also participated in the inspection.

Emohua Local Government Council officials guided the inspection team through the impacted sites across the region, facilitating a comprehensive assessment of the environmental degradation caused by these illicit activities.
