The Emohua LGA Emergency Management Committee commissioned by the LGA chairman, Dr. Chidi Lloyd ahead of the imminent 2023 flood as forecasted by the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) on Tuesday kick-started a community to community awareness campaign to sensitize residents of communities that may be affected by flood in the area on the need to embark on regular cleaning of waterways and drainages.
The committee chaired by Hon Peter Wogbo, the Executive Assistant on Special Duties to the LGA chairman during the awareness campaign also educated residents of the visited communities on the early warning signs of a flash flood, while encouraging the people to be vigilant, especially during and after every heavy downpour to avoid being taken aware.
Some of the early warning signs of flood include dam or river bank failure, tropical storms and hurricanes, prolonged rainfall, as well as early snow melting, depending on the topography of a particular area.
The committee also identified suitable locations to situate camps for internally displaced persons (IDP) and temporary learning facilities for students of flood-affected schools in preparation for the impending 2023 flood.
The Emohua Local Government Emergency Management Committee further initiated the partnership with traditional rulers of the visited communities to ensure that the awareness campaign is extended to every nook and cranny in the area with the use of local town criers. Some of the areas visited include Rumuekpe, Rundele, Elele-Alimini, Akpabu, and Omudioga communities.
Recall that the Chairman of Emohua local government area, Dr. Chidi Lloyd had during the inauguration of the committee charged them to hit the ground running with the public awareness campaign and desilting of the drainages and clearing of the median along the Emohua LGA axis of the East-West road. and other strategic locations in the LGA.
It’s also worthy of note that the desilting of the drainages and clearing of the median, as well as the shoulders of the East-West road already commenced a day after the committee inauguration and work is still ongoing at the different sections of the East-West road from the Emohua / Choba bridge to the boundary between Emohua and Ahoada-East LGAs via Elele-Alimini.
